On Trend with Tassels

The last Monday in August - so hard to believe the summer is almost over! It seems like most people are dying for fall to arrive, but I am definitely still enjoying the warm weather. I have always said that if I could live in a climate where I could wear tank tops, jeans, and sandals all year I would be in heaven! Thankfully it stays warm in Albuquerque for at least another month, so I plan to dress the part. I am always a fan of dressing up basics with colorful accessories. These mirrored Ray Bans from Ditto that I am borrowing from their Endless Eyewear program add the perfect pop of color. If you haven't heard of the Endless Eyewear program, you basically get to try out a bunch of designer sunglasses for only $19 a month. You can try your first month free with the code MIDDLEOFSOMEWHERE. I also love the special touch that this gorgeous tassel necklace from Sift With Style adds to an otherwise pretty simple outfit. Katie, the shop's owner has so many cute color combinations to choose from and today we are giving one lucky follower a chance to win a tassel necklace of your choice. All you have to do is head over to my Instagram (@lindsayrutland) to enter!

5 Tips for Dressing Your Post-Baby Body

It's pretty hard to believe that I have been a mom for a little over 3 months already! Harper turned 13 weeks old last week, and it really is incredible how quickly time flies once you become a parent. I feel like my body is finally only somewhat back to "normal", but I definitely still have my days where it feels like nothing will ever fit correctly again. I have pretty much accepted the fact that a lot of the clothes I own from BB (before baby) will never fit the same again. While I was pregnant I really never thought about how certain parts of my body would change and possibly never return to it's original state. Granted I have hardly made any lifestyle changes to help speed up the process, but it can still be really frustrating when you are dying to wear something from before you were pregnant and having to accept that it's not going to happen. I am always reminded of one of my favorite Mean Girls quotes, "Sweats are all that fit me right now." In the weeks after giving birth, I definitely Googled how to dress my postpartum body and had little luck finding helpful tips, which is surprising since you can pretty much find anything on Google these days. Keep in mind, the tips that I am about to share are what has worked best for me, although I am pretty confident that they can be generalized to most body shapes and sizes.

1. Don't rule out your maternity jeans! After I had Harper, I couldn't wait to get back into a pair of jeans. Looking back, it was pretty ridiculous that I expected any of my pants to fit me so soon! Take my advice and don't even try any of your pre-pregnancy jeans on for at least the first 2 months. The fact is that unless you are one of the few lucky ones who bounce back to your pre-baby size right away, you will probably have to wear your maternity jeans for at least a few months or more. I'm here to tell you that IT'S TOTALLY NORMAL AND OK! There is so much pressure to fit into our pre-pregnancy clothes that it's hard not to feel bad about yourself for throwing on a pair of maternity jean after your baby has arrived, which is so silly! I was still wearing my favorite pair of maternity jeans in this post about 2 months after having Harper.

2. Maxi dresses are a life saver. I pretty much only wore maxi dresses for the first month after I had a baby when I wasn't wear yoga pants. Thankfully, I was able to wear a lot of the same dresses before, during, and after pregnancy, like my favorite cobalt maxi and this emerald green one. After having Harper, I realized that I also needed to be strategic in getting dressed so I could always be ready to nurse her if needed. If you plan to breastfeed, Pink Blush maxi dresses are nursing friendly and are SO comfortable.

3. Treat yourself to a few new pieces. You just had a baby. You did the hardest thing you will probably ever have to physically, mentally, and emotionally do. If that doesn't deserve some new clothes then I don't know what does! Old Navy has been my bestie in the past few months. It was a sad day when I realized that at least 75% of the tops I own may not ever fit me again (or at least they probably won't until I am done nursing), however this is the perfect time to pick up a few new tanks and tees to get you by! I just sized up in this boyfriend tank and some loose fitting tees from Target.

4. Elastic waistbands are your friend. In reference to tip #1, even though it's ok to wear maternity jeans, you will probably get sick of wearing them all the time. If you're like me, you will want to wear pants, but will get tired of having a full belly band that rides down because you don't have a bump to hold it up. I took a chance on some soft pants from Old Navy and they have really been a life saver. They can be dressed up or down, and basically feel like sweats because they have an elastic waistband. Do yourself a favor and pick a pair of these up!

5. When all else fails, accessorize. Because when you're not feeling so great about your new body (even though we should feel nothing but proud of ourselves considering we grew and birthed a baby!), throwing on a statement necklace, some oversized sunglasses, or cute pair of embellished sandals totally helps!

Polka Dots With Pockets

Well hello there! Happy Monday! I feel like I haven't shared a blog post in way too long and it hasn't even been a whole week. Trying to blog multiple times a week feels like such a struggle to me right now. I don't know how some mamas do it, please tell me your secrets! Finding the time to not only take photos, but sit down to edit and write a post can sometimes feel absolutely daunting and impossible. I do have to say that it helps me feel motivated and inspired when I have new pieces to wear and style, like this polka dot skirt from Mikarose. All I have to say when it comes to this skirt is... POCKETS! I am a sucker for a dress or skirt that has pockets. I also really love the length of this skirt and think it would be flattering on so many different body types! It's also super lightweight and easy to wear now that it's been so incredibly hot out. I decided to pair it with some of my favorite neutral accessories and an old striped tee from Old Navy that I haven't worn in forever, but have enjoyed getting back into since having Harper. I know it's not very blogger like of me, but I really do love remixing the same pieces across various blog posts. Do you have a favorite piece that you like to remix?

Floral & Stripes with Oakleigh Rose

Last weekend my husband and I ventured out for the first time since Harper was born as a family of 4 (yes, I included our dog in this). Usually we take turns running errands so that one of us will go out and the other stays home with the baby. I feel like a lot of people think I am weird, but Harper has only been out a handful of times since she was born, as in I can probably count on one hand the number of places she has been. On Saturday we decided to change things up a bit and were brave enough to head over to one of our favorite places to eat. Surprisingly, it worked out perfectly! We had hoped to go to breakfast/brunch, however we now run on Harper time, so when she wound up nursing and sleeping the majority of the morning it was hard to get out of the house. In the early afternoon we were finally able to make it out and I'm so glad we did! I wore this super comfy maxi dress from Oakleigh Rose Boutique paired with one of my favorite floral scarves since it was overcast and really not that hot out. My outfit choices are always strategic when going anywhere with Harper in tow, and I love that this maxi dress covers all the bases (i.e. comfortable, easy to accessorize, and nursing friendly). Oakleigh Rose has some of the cutest dresses, and most of them are currently on sale! In addition to the striped dress I am wearing, some of my favorites include the Pop of Color maxi and the Aztec maxi for my fellow curvy girls.

Dear Weekend, I Love You + Style Saturday Link Up

This week was my first week back to work since having Harper and man, was it HARD! The work itself wasn't too difficult, but leaving her every day definitely was. I thought today's graphic tank from Katydid Collection was totally fitting of how I am feeling this week, and I am really looking forward to spending some time with my baby girl and husband (and Joanie too!) Today I am joining Megan of The Fashionista Momma for her weekly Style Saturday link up. I was lucky enough to come across Megan's blog from the Fab Female Bloggers Facebook group and I am so glad that I did. This beautiful mama of two not only shares some fabulous outfit ideas, but great beauty and health tips as well! Make sure to head over to her blog to check out what she is wearing this Style Saturday and link up your favorite outfit from the week below.
